  29. Syngnathidae - are highly valuable ingredients in
  30. traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The volume,
  31. value, sources and trade routes of pipehorses in
  32. international trade remain poorly understood, however.
  33. This study, carried out in Hong Kong SAR (Special
  34. Administrative Region) in January 2002, provides first
  35. estimates of these variables from interviews with wholesalers,
  36. retail surveys and Customs data. It appears that
  37. at least 1000-2000 kg of pipehorses are traded each
  38. year within Hong Kong, with a retail value of
  39. HKD2700-6700 per kg. Historically, Australia has been
  40. the most important source nation. However, indirect
  41. estimates from Customs data suggest that Malaysia, the
  42. Philippines and particularly Thailand may also be
  43. important exporters of pipehorses to Hong Kong. The
  44. effect of trade on the survival of pipehorse populations
  45. cannot be evaluated at present. To ensure long-term
  46. sustainability of pipehorse trade and to avoid the need
  47. to consider listing under CITES, increased engagement
  48. with TCM stakeholders is required. This will allow
  49. more precise evaluation of the trade, determination of
  50. alternatives to pipehorses in TCM and acceptability of
  51. management measures or controls. In addition, reporting
  52. by genus or species from other source and import
  53. nations is urgently required to determine the global

  255. Syngnathidae - are highly valuable ingredients in
  256. traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The volume,
  257. value, sources and trade routes of pipehorses in
  258. international trade remain poorly understood, however.
  259. This study, carried out in Hong Kong SAR (Special
  260. Administrative Region) in January 2002, provides first
  261. estimates of these variables from interviews with wholesalers,
  262. retail surveys and Customs data. It appears that
  263. at least 1000-2000 kg of pipehorses are traded each
  264. year within Hong Kong, with a retail value of
  265. HKD2700-6700 per kg. Historically, Australia has been
  266. the most important source nation. However, indirect
  267. estimates from Customs data suggest that Malaysia, the
  268. Philippines and particularly Thailand may also be
  269. important exporters of pipehorses to Hong Kong. The
  270. effect of trade on the survival of pipehorse populations
  271. cannot be evaluated at present. To ensure long-term
  272. sustainability of pipehorse trade and to avoid the need
  273. to consider listing under CITES, increased engagement
  274. with TCM stakeholders is required. This will allow
  275. more precise evaluation of the trade, determination of
  276. alternatives to pipehorses in TCM and acceptability of
  277. management measures or controls. In addition, reporting
  278. by genus or species from other source and import
  279. nations is urgently required to determine the global
